Prelude...
Greetings from the ferocious millennium, and the new Dark Age... It is time
for the shadows to fall once more across the deepening sky, and the Armies of
the Night to rise as infinity dimly fades into an epic eternal night.
So let the stars burn for evermore. And let us enter STRANGER AEONS. Enjoy,
tribes of chaos. Hail Darkness, and God.
Grit your teeth, and DARE it! Grim journeys...

"'The Genocide Machine' by Circle Of Dead Children"
by
Bill Vogel III
September 14, 2001 A.D.
Given the events of the past week, I've worked, written, and listened a lot
of aggressive music. These tactics kept my head cleared, and my insanity
down to a normal level.
The more brutal the music, the better the effect.
In the world of Grindcore it takes a truly great band to shine. Circle Of
Dead Children (CODC for short) is just such an act. Their latest offering
"The Genocide Machine" [Necropolis Records] is a wickedly demented slab of
Power/Grindcore Metal. Blasting, speeds are backboned with segments of slow,
massive tempos. It's about crushing artistic brutality, not just speed.
This deviation makes Circle Of Dead Children great, instead of just good.
Circle Of Dead Children is fast, filled with raging outbursts...but that is
merely one flashpoints out of many. Dual vocal assaults (shrill, Hardcore
growls and deep, guttural ones), politically fired lyrics, crushing blast
beats juxtaposed against frenetic moments, and rhythms so tight that they
break the laws of physics. Circle Of Dead Children are true new school
masters of Grind.
It's genius...
The best of these magnificently brutal cuts includes the short, monstrously
heavy "Migration," "It's A Bloody Day When You Get Your Head Nailed To A
Cross," the bestial roar of "When We Make The Clouds Scream," "Isabella's
Nightmare," "From Eros To Thanatos," "Only One Per Coffin," "Wormpaste (Bled
Through The Earth)," "CTRL*ALT*DELETE," and the title track. Circle Of Dead
Children go full-on, all guns blazing.
Overall, Circle Of Dead Children is an amazing act that incorporates Hardcore
into their Grindcore style. They have created one of the best releases of
2001, as well as one of the finest Grindcore slabs ever. Take care. God
Bless. Stay Savage. Farewell.

"'Holy Dead Trinity' by Hate"
by
Bill Vogel III
September 11, 2001 A.D.
It seemed a bit apocalyptic-both World Trade Centers crashing into fiery
ruination, 4 fallen airliners and the smoldering remains of the Pentagon
flashing on TV. It was just another inane act by petty, stupid little men
trying to prove their weakness. So many lives were wasted for nothing.
After seeing the surreal, tragic events of this day in needed something
brutal to cleanse my spirit...to temper the rage. Then I found my fire. I
found Hate.
The new Hate album "Holy Dead Trinity" [World War III Records] is a
punishing, yet catchy hybrid of Brutal Blackened/Death Metal and Deathrock
Metal ala Oppressor, Konkhra, and Entombed. Hate is unique, powerful Polish
killing machine.
Chunky, pummeling guitar blasts, crushing rhythms, hook impaled tempos, and
gnarling growled vocals fuse into a mesmerizing din of pure sonic mayhem.
It's a snarling, rage fueled release that surpasses the pack in skill and
ferocity.
The most viciously cool cuts include "World Has To Die" (my favorite), the
feral "Lord Is Avenger," "Dead & Mystified," "The Kill," the explosive
"Paradise As Lost," and the title track. It's brutal, bombastic, and a blunt
force trauma of artistic bedlam.
In summation, this is untainted, unrestrained fury of storming beauty.
Remember your anger-it's a blessing. Stay savage. Farewell.

"'Orphan' by Darwin's Waiting Room"
by
Bill Vogel III
September 12, 2001 A.D.
Florida's own Darwin's Waiting Room is an engine of destruction with intent.
Integrating elements of Aggro, Rapcore, and Heavy Melodic Rock, they create
an intense, stirring din of musical stomp. Their debut, titled "Orphan" [MCA
Records], is an exemplary example of the new breed of Heavy Metal.
Darwin's Waiting Room uses a dual vocal barrage (often layered)-one Rapped
and the other a powerful melodic yell. They are similar to Linkin Park,
except that Darwin's Waiting Room is heavier and far less Pop inflected. The
guitars are chunky and moody, but softer, more melodious moments pop-up
(sometimes with acoustic tinges).
The coolest tracks include the morosely powerful "Feel So Stupid (Table-9),"
"All I Have Is Me," the pounding "Sometimes It Happens Like This," "In To The
Dark," "Live For The Moment," and "Another Way." Darwin's Waiting Room
hybridizes several common styles, but in a unique and special way.
Overall, this is a great release by a superior new Melodic Aggro/Rapcore
Metal band. Life is just a series of mishaps and moments. Don't let it
worry you. Endure. Stay savage. Farewell.
Related Bands: Linkin Park, Korn, Cold, Drowning Pool, Capital Eye,

"Shadow (Self-Titled)"
by
Bill Vogel III
September 6, 2001 A.D.
In the field of Melodic Death Metal, most people will think of Scandinavia
(in particular Sweden). Japan just wouldn't come to mind. That would be a
tragic error.
The band Shadow defies the conventional logic. The Japanese band's new self-
titled opus [Century Media Records] is a blindingly powerful display of
Melodic Death with a twisted edge. Heavy, Progressive guitar solos are
layered over thick leads, frenzied rhythms, and shrill female Death growls
that are as weighty as most men's vocals of that scene. The arrangements are
intricate, exact, and brutal.
The guitar solos often have a virtuoso quality ala Godgory. The most
wickedly good cuts include the psychopathic stride of "The Arrival At The
Last Quarter," "Breath Of Awakening," the distinctive howling fury of "Lunar
Eclipse," "The Reunion In Soul Asylum," and "Beyond The Drizzly Nights."
Each cut is a rabid outburst of burning apocalyptic poetry.
Overall, this is a dynamic, vicious work that will turn heads and wake the
dead. Shadow is the standard by which the future of Melodic Death Metal will
be judged. Stay savage. Farewell.
Related Bands: Soilwork, Hypocrisy, In Flames, Crematory, Godgory,
Opeth, Sentenced [early], etc.

"'Rapture' by Dragonlord"
by
Bill Vogel III
September 1, 2001 A.D.
When it comes down to it, something has to be said for finely honed
aggression. Dragonlord (a side-project of the mighty Testament) is just such
an act. On their debut, titled "Rapture" [Spitfire Records], they purge a
cosmic rage of purest ferocity.
Dragonlord's style is a hyper-explosive mixture of Grinding Blackened Death
Metal and powerful, bleak Classical arrangements. Shrill Death growls drill
through punishing, fiery guitar blasts of frenetic speed, machinegun rhythms,
and dark symphonic instruments that roll like a thunderous hum behind the
bombast. It is quite a vicious maelstrom-steeped in anger and glory.
The most incredible cuts include "Unholyvoid," the ferocious "Born To
Darkness," "Wolfhunt," "Tradition And Fire," and the title track. This is
blood, fire, and mayhem.
In summary, this is beautiful aggression at its finest and fiercest.
Dragonlord creates truly excellent Classical Blackened Death Metal for the
darkest souls. This is something that should not be missed. Stay savage.
Farewell.

"'U.S. Legions' by Mayhem"
by
Bill Vogel III
September 21, 2001 A.D.
Black Metal knows no nationality. One of the most revered of the grisly
pack, Norway's own Mayhem, has returned. Their latest opus, "U.S. Legions"
[Renegade Records], is a combination of live and raw, unreleased new tracks.
Mayhem plays demented Blackened Thrash Metal ala Hellhammer, but in a for
more psychotic fashion. Screeched growls; crusty, fast guitars; and
breakneck rhythms are the fiery visage of their art. The resulting style is
pure, insane genius.
The most ghastly cuts include the classic "Necrolust (Live From USA)," the
blistering ode "Chainsaw Gutsfuck (Live)," "In The Lies Where Upon You Lay
(Pre-production Version)," "Crystallized Pain In Deconstruction (Pre-
production Version)," and both the live & pre-production versions of the epic
"View From Nihil." The production value is a bit rough at times, but it is
still an exceptionally good opus.
In summary, Mayhem has a well-earned reputation for artful ferocity. And
album continues that roar. Stay savage. Farewell.

"'300 Percent Density' by Candiria"
by
Bill Vogel III
September 15, 2001 A.D.
Eclectic and diverse are two words made to describe the caustic force that is
Candiria. Their latest album "300 Percent Density" [Century Media Records]
continues the evolution. Candiria is a band without boundaries-mixing
Metalcore, Jazz, pure Rap, and Grindcore into an artistic aggression of
cosmic proportions.
With all of these elements Candiria is in one unifying goal-to create killer
heavy music. The vocals range from metallic growls to clean rapping,
sometimes contrasting in the same song. Pummeling, moiling guitars and
rhythms are the norm, but synth segments are used with the Raps.
The most amazing cuts include: the Rap/Metalcore mayhem of "Without Water"
and "Words From The Lexicon"; the Grind assaults of "Channeling Elements" and
"Signs Of Discontent"; and the Metalcore wallop of the title track. This is
an album that smashes, crashes, and spits pure acidic venom.
In summary, this is a great, diverse Candiria slab of Grind/Rap Metalcore.
And it is great. Stay savage. Farewell.

"'Thelema.6' by Behemoth"
by
Bill Vogel III
September 11, 2001 A.D.
Poland is a country that produces some amazing aggressive bands-most notably
the Death Metal powerhouse Vader. Lesser known, but no less incredible is
the wicked Behemoth. On their latest offering, "Thelema.6" [Olympic
Records], they take Blackened Death Metal to an eclectic, killer level of
insanity.
Behemoth brings to this traditional sound elements such as Deathrock tempos,
slower paced melodies with a dark, serrated hook, and blasts of surreal,
cosmic guitar leads. It's strangely cool, and cohesive.
It's an addictive, eerie quality that makes Behemoth so good. The best of
these maddeningly brilliant cuts include "Inauguration Of Scorpio Dome," the
weird and explosive "The Act Of Rebellion," the burning "Inflamed With Rage,"
"Vinvm Sabbati," and "The End." Behemoth is trippy, and tenebrously
powerful.
In final words, I must say that Behemoth is a roaring fire in a million
flickering embers that is the ever-growing Black Metal genre. This is one
that should not be missed by any true fan of Black or Death Metal. Stay
savage. Farewell.

"'Amor Fati' by Peccatum"
by
Bill Vogel III
August 28, 2001 A.D.
When it comes to Black Metal, there are all different types. Peccatum is one
such unique type. On their new opus "Amor Fati" [Candlelight Records], they
push bizarre elements into the mix. (The phrase "Amor Fati" was coined by
irrationalist philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche-in Latin it means "Love of
Fate.")
Taking that old school Black Metal fury, they interlace portions of strange,
eerie symphony instruments, keyboards, etc. Even with these more avant-garde
elements, the result is cohesive yet mind-shatteringly great. It's a musical
freakshow of twistedly wicked delights.
The best cuts include "Between The Living And The Dead," the surreal "No
Title For A Cause," "Murder," and "A Game Divine?". Insanity has no rules,
as does genius. Peccatum is a little bit of both.
The final words on this release are that it is strange, brilliant, and
eclectic. So love your fate. Stay savage. Farewell.

"'10 Years Of Chaos And Confusion' by Hypocrisy"
by
Bill Vogel III
September 15, 2001 A.D.
When it comes down to the guts of it, it takes as much talent as aggression
to make a really great Death Metal band. One truly great Death Metal act is
Sweden's own sons of mayhem Hypocrisy. Forming 10 years ago after Petre was
inspired by the Florida scene here in the U.S.A., he created this legendary
act after returning home.
Now a decade later, Hypocrisy has released "10 Years Of Chaos And Confusion"
[Nuclear Blast Records] to mark the occasion. But this is no mere "Best Of"
album-it assembles classic tracks and re-recorded gems from the early days.
The new slant placed on these standards makes for a different, interesting
spin on these feral days.
The most viciously cool cuts include "Fire In The Sky," "Roswell 47" (one of
their very best), the devastating "Apocalypse (Re-Recorded)," "Killing Art,"
"Left To Rot (Re-Recorded)," "Penetralia (Re-Recorded)," and the crushing
"The Fourth Dimension (Re-Recorded)." Hypocrisy is the definition of Swedish
Style Death Metal...the best.
Overall, this is yet another great album by Hypocrisy. Is that surprising?
...Of course not. Anything less just wouldn't be Hypocrisy. Endure.
Farewell.

"'Mood Swingz' by Capitol Eye"
by
Bill Vogel III
September 12, 2001 A.D.
In the ever-stagnating genre of Rapcore Metal, few of the pure style new acts
bring anything different to the raucous. That is Capitol Eye deviates from
the crowd. On their new release "Mood Swingz" [77 Records], they take strong
Rapcore wrack and fixate moodier, melodic segments into their songs.
Capitol Eye, while building off of a more conventional Rock aesthetic, twists
this baseline into a wickedly cool stomp of grimacing grins and attitude.
The rapped are in a clean midrange style, but still very emotional. Guitars
are minimal-being still chunky with a good hook.
The most killer cuts are the hammer pounding groove of "Serpentine," the
efficient melodiousness of "The Dice Roll," "Shotgun," the romp and rumble of
"Checkin' Ya," and "Let's Go." Capitol Eye has a sound that is direct,
beautiful, and crunchy.
In summary, this is an excellent release by a great Melodic Rapcore Metal.
And the title is very appropriate. Stay savage. Farewell.

"'The Gate' by Goliath"
by
Bill Vogel III
August 28, 2001 A.D.
One band that exemplifies praising the old while keeping their teeth on the
bleeding pulse of the new is Goliath. Their debut, titled "The Gate" [The
Music Cartel], fuses old school Psychedelic Rock with modern Doom/Sludge
Metal. Think of it as one big sonic street brawl between THE DOORS, TROUBLE,
and MOTORHEAD. Now you get the picture.
Deep, clean vocals mix with gravelly, rumbled groans. This is then threaded
into massive, doomie guitar riffs and obliterating rhythm assaults. It's
slow, low, and powerful.
The best tracks are "I Am," the crawl of "The Dark One," "Dear Aleister," and
tumbling dread of "Demons." It's metallic, morose, and thoughtfully done
music that breathes liquid steel.
In summary, Goliath is a cool new Psychedelic Doom/Sludge Metal for the
truest of Doom freaks. So enter the gate, and let the shadows howl. Stay
savage. Farewell.

"'Free And Easy' by Bad Wizard"
by
Bill Vogel III
September 13, 2001 A.D.
New York band Bad Wizard has a unique slant on things. Their debut, "Free
And Easy" [Tee Pee Records], is a big, sweaty street brawl of an album.
Featuring ex-members of Helldorado and El Gusano, this tenacious act takes
old school Southern Rock, Psychedelic Metal, and a roaring dose of attitude
and creates a rollicking, raging fit.
Huge, snarling guitars, Curtis Brown's raspy howls, and Bluesy rhythms rivets
the soul of Bad Wizard's style together. The best songs include the romp-
and-stomp of "Lay Your Love On Me," "Come On," "Tiger Tooth," and the title
track.
Southern/Psychedelic Metal is the magic of Bad Wizard's kingdom. Fans of
this style will definitely NOT be disappointed in this great release. Stay
savage. Farewell.
