In the new breed of modern American Metal music, the evident trend is Moodcore Metal mutations (i.e. Korn with Rap, Korn with Punk, or Korn with Korn). Few of these bands distinguish themselves to any true degree. One band that has built a great sound off of the Moodcore foundation is the excellent act Unloco.
On their latest opus "Healing" [Maverick Records] they fuse bursts of raw Aggro Metal intensity with a Pop aesthetic and Moodcore Metal hormonal attitudes. It's an explosive lunatic fit-lurking the shadows from a serene stoic anger to a total melodic rampage-creating a visceral skyfall of dynamic, addictive soundscapes of swaggering temper.
The vocals range from a clean, moody howl to melodious growls. The instrumental pummeling is the backbone of this beast, pounding blowtorch incineration blast beats, catchy rhythms, and guitar leads into an emotional and primal assault.
The best cuts include the opener "Useless," the pounding percussion of "Face Down," "Naïve," and the ripping rant of "Reckoning." Every song is good though...there's no filler tracks here.
Overall, even while constructing their style on a well-worn sound Unloco takes it in a great direction creating a brutal beauty that is all their own. They're better than Korn.
They have earned themselves a position as one of the Best New Bands of 2001. So go loco with Unloco. Stay savage. Farewell.
