Darkness Falls...

Greetings from the outer Darkness. It is time for the shadows to fall and
the Armies of the Night to rise as infinity dimly fades into eternal night.
This is the epoch of the new Dark Age. Let us enter STRANGER AEONS. Enjoy,
tribes of chaos. Hail Darkness, and God.

Grit your teeth, and DARE it! Grim journeys...

In the news***

If you like Moodcore Metal, Rapcore Metal, and the MARILYN MANSON dark
Industrial Metal sounds then check out the new band LINKIN PARK.

INDECISION has sadly called it a day. This brutal, discordant Hardcore act
pushed the very limits of the genre. Their style was so heavy that it
bordered on Death Metal, being similar to acts such as ACID BATH, HATEBREED,
and TURMOIL. INDECISION had several releases, the peak of which was their
last..."Release The Cure" on M.I.A. Records. This is a moment of mournful

Be on the lookout for the soundtrack for the new Tales From The Crypt movie
"Monsters Of Rock." It features cuts by ANTHRAX, PANTERA, ARCH ENEMY,
many others.

M.I.A. Records is no more. It featured acts such as INDECISION, CANDIRIA,
and ROADSAW. No word yet as to the state of their acts or catalog.

Check out the new CD by ROTTEN SOUND, aptly titled "Still Psycho." Besides
the great Grindcore cuts, including a cover of Carcass's "Reek Of
Putrefaction," it has enhanced features that will run on a PC. The added
digital enhancements include live concert footage. (A review follows in the
SOULGRIND section of STRANGER AEONS Magazine.)

SLIPKNOT will enter the studio next month to start recording the follow-up to
their acclaimed debut release.

SPINESHANK's new CD is titled "The Height Of Callousness." It's out now.

Metal Blade Records has signed THE FALLEN.

RUDRA is a new Death Metal band. Their latest self-titled CD features Indian
and Middle Eastern musical influences.

GODSMACK has released their second opus, titled "Awake." The first
video/single is the title track.

CARNAL FORGE, those crust covered Brutal Death Metal maniacs, have signed
with Century Media Records. Their first release for their new label will be
titled "Firedemon." Be sure to try their classic opus "Who's Gonna Burn" on
W.A.R. Records and Relapse Records.

On November 7th. the first INCUBUS [the Funk/Rapcore Metal band] opus, "Fungus
Amongus," will be reissued.

Mexican Grinding Death Metal freaks DISGORGE has finally released their next
CD, titled "Forensick," on Repulse Records. I've got it, and I guarantee the
gory greatness of it. You won't believe the medical dictionary song titles.
They're whacked beyond all CARCASS... Excellent stuff. Expect a review

GODHEAD will tour with MARILYN MANSON. Expect a new album from them in early
2001 on Plasmahead Records (Manson's label). The new release will be titled
"2000 Years Of Human Error."

DYING FETUS has released their next album, titled "Destroy The Opposition,"
on Relapse Records.

MUDVAYNE has released their debut, called "LD. 50."

Among the other terrors in this issue are REVIEWS of the following albums:

        ROTTEN SOUND......................"Still Psycho"
        PISSING RAZORS...................."Fields of Disbelief"

These are 13 CDs that are sworn to brutalize without any tinge remorse, or
mercy for that matter. I offer only the best and most savage, never anything
less. Get brutalized!

Welcome to Stranger Aeons. These days are strange... Farewell.

                       "'Still Psycho' by Rotten Sound"
                                Bill Vogel III

October 31, 2000 A.D.

On the darkest day on the year what better release to review than Rotten
Sound? Nothing... The new mini-CD by Rotten Sound, aptly titled "Still
Psycho" [Necropolis Records], is a crusty yet catchy slab of some of the best
Grindcore Metal ever. And it is also one of the BEST RELEASES OF 2000 as
well. It's a compact, visceral work that follows another killer release this
year by Rotten Sound, called "Drain."

Rotten Sound is one of the best, and most underrated of bands. Their style
is a ferocious mixture of Crustcore, Hardcore, Grindcore, and Deathrock.
Imagine fierce Grindcore onslaughts highlighted with Deathrock licks, catchy
hook driven rhythms, and a varied vocal assault ranging from deep growls to
shrill, vicious screeches. The effect is guttural and devastating...making
most acts seem placid in comparison.
There is no comparison.

Rotten Sound makes aggression into a fine art. It's heavy, visceral, savage,
and never meek-they have perfected chaos.

This disc features 6 cuts, all of which are excellent. The best ones though
include the Blackened Grind of "Perfection," the utter brutality on
"StrongMan," the sheer ferocity of "Ignorance," and their wicked cover of
CARCASS's "Reek Of Putrefaction." (This is one of the best covers, ever.)

There is no reason to miss out on a CD this great. It's the perfection of
symmetric brutality. Rotten Sound is insane Grindcore eclecticism at its
very best. Get it! Stay Psycho. Farewell.

"'Fields Of Disbelief' by Pissing Razors"
                                Bill Vogel III

November 2, 2000 A.D.

Somewhere lurking within the void is a voracious hybrid of styles. Often
these mutations (or progressions) don't work, but when they do it is truly
explosive. One such explosively brilliant band is the Texas based Power
Death Metal band Pissing Razors. Their new CD, "Fields Of Disbelief" [Noise
Records], is a primal combination of Powercore (e.g. Pantera) and Industrial
Death Metal with slight Tribal influences.

Pissing Razors fuses the power and Thrash rumble of Pantera, the Industrial
rhythms and brutality of Fear Factory, and a charged Tribal drumming style
that is both raw and mechanical in its implementation. The result is adjunct
jagged tempos, piercing guitar blasts, and steel press intensity rhythms all
juxtaposed against fierce, intense Death growl vocals that have the subtle
caress of a blast furnace. It's unique, brilliant, dark, and ferocious.

The most vicious of these killer tracks include "Ruin," my favorite one which
is called "Fork Tongue," "Between Heaven And Hell," "Sever The Ties," and
"You'll Never Know." There are 13 cuts, every one a savage little piece of
artful pandemonium. Pissing Razors redefines hostile intent...

In summary, this is a riotous work that stands outs from the currently turgid
crop of eMpTV wannabe Korn acts. This band charges into the breach in a full
on fury. "Fields Of Disbelief" by Pissing Razors is a monumental opus that
ranks as one of the very best of the year. It'll please the monster in all
of us. After all, aggression has no boundaries. Stay savage. Farewell.

                         "'Escape' by Burning Heads"
                               Bill Vogel III

November 2, 2000 A.D.

Praise be to Old School Punk Rock. Seems that these days punk mostly comes
in two overdone varieties-Pop Punk (ala Blink 182) and Ska Punk. Man, am I
sick of cheesy horn sections and whiny overwrought vocals. If you are
suffering the same malady, then here's the cure...

The band Burning Heads does Old School, heavy gauge Punk Metal the way it was
meant to be. Their new CD, "Escape" [Victory Records], scorches a new path
in a glorious old way. Deep, powerful vocals (in the vein of the MISFITS)
with a tinge of angst are laid over heavy, molten instrumentals spiked with
clever hooks and catchy grooves. The result is a powerful, yet melodious,
album that will addict and please every style of fanatic in the Punk Rock

The best cuts include "Who Wants To Know," "Y2K Riot," "Among The Stars"
[which is my favorite], "End Up Like You," "A Bitter Taste," and "Thinking Of
The Time." The killer track "Babylone By Skate" features some punishing
Reggae flavored Punk Rock pleasantly free of Ska.

There are 15 songs in all. Every track shreds...definitely making this the
MUST HAVE Punk Rock release of 2000. Burning Heads is a name to remember.

Overall, this is a great release by a new milestone Punk act. So go get it!
It's time to go back to school...the Old School. Stay savage. Later.

                        "'Into The Abyss' by Hypocrisy"
                                Bill Vogel III

October 14, 2000 A.D.

It is good to return to one's roots. Such is the case with Hypocrisy's
latest release, "Into The Abyss" [Nuclear Blast Records]. The masters of
Northern Style Death Metal have returned with a fiercer rage and a grimmer
outlook, but still keeping the more progressive and experimental elements
that fueled recent creations. "Into The Abyss" has a more raw and brutal
feel, harkening back to early works such as "Inferior Devotee." Hypocrisy
has not mellowed, but has envenomed with age.

Tracks of most evident rage and greatness include "Fire In The Sky," "Unfold
The Sorrow," "Death Row (No Regrets)," and "Total Eclipse." Reckon as you
will, Hypocrisy is still turgid with aggression. And this release is just
another reason why Hypocrisy will always be one of the greatest Death Metal
bands ever. Their progression continues, as well as their aggression.

In summary, this is another excellent opus by Hypocrisy. But what else would
we expect? It's just another moment, as we march into the abyss. Farewell.

                      "'The Infernal Storm' by Incantation"
                                 Bill Vogel III

October 20, 2000 A.D.

Returning from the depths of Pennsylvania, the home of Gettysburg and weird
wererat sightings (don't look at me...I guess shapeshifters come in all
varieties) is the wickedly brutal Black tinged Brutal Death Metal band
Incantation. On their latest slab, titled "The Infernal Storm" [Relapse
Records], they are pushing the fringes of sanity and extremity. They have
taken their usual gut shaking style and added a little midrange guitar for
increased ferocity. This dynamic works well, leaving their best work yet
burning brighter than the sun.

The vocals are deep, guttural growls with more shredding jags than 3 miles of
razor-wire fence. The instrumentals fit perfectly with this, creating an
intense wall of sonic brutality that is heavier than a WWI tank. It's a
crushing effect...brilliantly done and violently beautiful.

The best cuts, vicious and deep, are "Apocalyptic Destroyer of Angels,"
"Impetus Rage," "Sempiternal Pandemonium," and my favorite "Anoint The
Chosen." The result is a damaging retaliation of pure abysmal fury that
destroys and awes. This is amazing stuff.

The end result, as a whole, is a brutal work of Death Metal that shakes the
pillars of Heaven. It's a must for Brutal Death Metal freaks, such as
myself, and fanatics of the extreme. Stay brutal. Farewell.

                                Bill Vogel III

October 27, 2000 A.D.

The darkness of Brazil is a place where things of wicked beauty are born.
One of these beguiling creations is the Blackened Death Metal band Krisiun.
Their thrall is a brutal, tenacious sound that is truly frenetic. Their new
CD is titled "Conquerors Of Armageddon" [Century Media Records].

Shrill, guttural growls are drilled deeply into hyper and brutal rhythms that
are jaggedly abrupt in their tempo changes. This mesmerizing cacophony is
then highlighted with sparsely used Progressive Style guitar licks. It's a
voracious and primal mix that will scatter the trendy Deathers like stomping
feet at a cockroach parade.

The wickedly coolest cuts are "Abyssal Gates," "Hatred Inherit," and "Endless
Madness Descends." Alex Camargo's are viciously surreal. There is no room
for doubt here...

In conclusio, this is a visceral dose of Blackened Hyper Death Metal in the
vein of early Samael and Sodom. It's savage, wicked, and definitely killer.
It's a must for the most vicious of Death freaks. Farewell.

"'The Only Law Is Survival' by Hate Plow"
                                Bill Vogel III

October 27, 2000 A.D.

In chaos theory, there is only one law...survival of the fiercest. Hate Plow
would definitely qualify for such a quality. On their new release, "The Only
Law Is Survival" [Pavement Records], Hate Plow pushes the very limits of
ferocity to its extremities. Their style is a crushing Death/Grindcore Metal
hybrid with touches of Deathrock added for contrast and jagged brutality.
Unlike some types of Grind, their sound is spiked with venomous, catchy hooks
and has an immediate addictive effect.

Growls are of a higher vocal range, and sometimes come in a duel assault.
Crusty edges are sharpened a bit with Deathrock instrumental portions used
sparingly between Grindcore ragings. The rhythms are furiously fast and
mechanically precise...almost inhuman. The assemblage of these razor sharp
teeth creates a brilliantly savage beast.

The best cuts include the visceral "Random Acts Of Violence," the aptly rabid
"Payback," and my favorite "Outcast." Other great tracks include "Resurgence
Of Hate," "Emotional Catastrophe," "F.T.M.," and the title song.

Overall, this is a definitive work for the Grindcore genre...a monumental
release that remarks the best factors-precision, brutality, ferocity, and
skill--as well as experimentation in Grind. It will be a must have release
for fans of Death, Grindcore, Hardcore, and Extreme Metal. Stay savage.

"'Innocence From Hell' by Viking Crown"
                               Bill Vogel III

October 27, 2000 A.D.

It's nearly that time of the year...when that grimmest of holidays comes
around. And in the tradition of that day, Halloween, I found the perfect
band. The band is Viking Crown, and their new CD called "Innocence From
Hell" [Necropolis Records] is the creepiest Black Metal that I have ever

Imagine dark, dense guitar riffs melding with unintelligible blackened
growls, and then all of this highlighted by atmospheric instruments such as
organs. It is utterly dark, but then this is contrasted with comical spoken
word samples that are intros and outros. Some will never understand it, but
I loved it. It's whacked and cracked, but that's half of its charm.

The best cuts include the abysmal title track, "Overlords Of Infinite
Depression," "The Seventh Storm Of The Blood Demon," "The Gathering," and
"The Burning Embers Of Mockery." Every track is abyssal black and creepy as

In summary, this opus is the perfect soundtrack for Halloween...or just a
really cool horror movie. This release is for the blackest of the Black.
(Viking Crown features Killjoy and Anton Crowley [a.k.a. Phil Anselmo of
Pantera]...if you care.) Farewell Sunlight.

                     "'Winds Of Creation' by Decapitated"
                                Bill Vogel III

October 27, 2000 A.D.

From the eastern kingdom of Poland comes a shattering Death Metal band called
Decapitated. Their debut opus, titled "Winds Of Creation [Wicked World
Records], is a fiery display of Technical Death Metal from the same country
that produced the legendary Vader. Decapitated's style is different though,
featuring a midrange guitar onslaught, pummeling rhythms with inhumanly fast
drum beats, and deep guttural growls that sometimes burst into a double vocal
barrage. The result is a truly unique, and brutal, experience.

The best tracks include the menacing "Blessed," the shredding assault of
"Nine Steps," and my favorite "The Eye Of Horus." And just for that little
extra, it features a blistering cover of Slayer's "Mandatory Suicide."

In summary, this is a solidly brutal piece of work by a great new Technical
Death Metal band. It is a must for the truly extreme Death Metal maniacs, or
anyone into Extreme Metal music. Get it, and learn how devastating the winds
of creation can be. After all, true creation can only be born of chaos.
Stay savage. Farewell.

                      "'NeChrist' by Nokturnal Mortum"
                              Bill Vogel III

Friday, October 13, 2000 A.D.

What could be more appropriate for a Friday the 13th than some truly fearsome
Black Metal? Nothing...nothing at all. The Slavonic band Nokturnal Mortum
has returned with their third and most groundbreaking offering, "NeChrist"
[The End Records]. This maelstrom of the macabre takes Death tempered Black
Metal to new extremes of aggression and beauty. The effect is a jaggedly
surreal journey into the outer reaches of dreaming darkness.

Few bands can successfully merge melodic influences with utter abyssal
ferocity. But Nokturnal Mortum does so, and they do it brilliantly. Stark,
abysmal growls and shrieks are barbed with furious instrumentals that are
sharpened and contrasted with regional colors. These subtle shadings take
the form of Folk flavored violin and other unusual instruments that twist the
darkness, making it even more venomous and wild.

Songs of the most nefarious nature, and wickedest bent, include "The Funeral
Wind Born In Oriana" (my favorite), "Black Raven," and the malignant "The
Child Of Swamps And Full Moon." Every track shreds or dreads.

In summary, a vicious album of Melodic Black Metal that is a storm of
maliciousness. Get it, and stay out of the daylight. Farewell.

"The Mystick Krewe Of Clearlight (Self-Titled)"
                                Bill Vogel III

Friday, October 13, 2000 A.D.

From the swampy depths of Louisiana has sprung a side-project band featuring
members of CROWBAR and EYEHATEGOD. That band is called The Mystick Krewe Of
Clearlight, and their self-titled debut on Tee Pee Records features expansive
instrumental cut of Southern tinged Psychedelic Heavy Rock. While lacking
the same intensity as either of the bands from which it is an offshoot, it
has a unique feel that will appeal to fans of MONSTER MAGNET, KARMA TO BURN,

It's a trippy ride that consists of 6 cuts, the longest of which ebbs out at
a fathomless length of 17 minutes and 29 seconds. (It's the last track,
called "El Nino Brown.") The best cuts are "Electrode" and "Swamp Jam," both
having a good stomp and the former featuring a little whacked organ playing.

Overall, it's a totally warped experience that I enjoyed. It takes us
somewhere that most of the current music doesn't...into the psychedelic void
of outer space. Later.

                      "'In Dark Purity' by Monstrosity"
                               Bill Vogel III

October 17, 2000 A.D.

A style of Death Metal that is not as renowned as it once was is Florida
Style. But the bands that are left are the best in this subgenre, and that
is what matters. The band that ranks at the vanguard edge of creative purity
for Florida Style Death Metal is the legendary Monstrosity. They are the
foremost beasts of the style, raging like a siege engine at the Gates of

On their latest release, titled "In Dark Purity" [Conquest Music], they
temper a fine example why. Big, loopy guitar licks pounding across pummeling
rhythms and shredding growled vocals that would disturb a dead man's sleep.
It's a visceral barrage of loosed fury played with technical precision and
mechanical brutality.

The best cuts include the maniacal "The Pillars Drear," the venomous
"Perpetual War," and the angst driven "Hymns Of Tragedy." And just for added
greatness there is their vicious cover of Slayer's "Angel Of Death." Simply
put-it's killer.

In summary, this is an excellent opus that is worthwhile addition to any
Death Metal fanatic's arsenal. It'll appeal to the Extreme Metal freak as
well. Farewell.

                          "'Primitive' by Soulfly"
                               Bill Vogel III

October 22, 2000 A.D.

Remember Soulfly? Max Cavalera's (ex-Sepultura) new band... Well, after an
excellent debut with their self-titled opus they have returned with a solid
follow-up release, called "Primitive" [Roadrunner Records]. While not being
quite as visceral as their first, it is a good CD with some major, as well as
odd, guest appearances. The basic sound that Soulfly goes for is a
Primitive/Tribal Death Metal with elements of Grindcore and Moodcore...

They smooth the rough edges a bit, but thankfully not too much. Aggression
is the key, and Soulfly has it. The best cuts include "Jumpdafuckup"
(featuring Corey of SLIPKNOT) which has an insane Aggro Metal feel, the
rambunctious "Back To The Primitive," "Terrorist" (with Tom Araya of SLAYER),
and "In Memory Of..."

The Sean Lennon guest appearance on "Son Song" added nothing, and came off
weak. But otherwise, this is a rocking slab. It's raw, brutal, and at times
atmospheric. Other guest appearances on this disc include Chino (Deftones)
and Grady Avenall (Will Haven) on "Pain."

Generally speaking, this is killer stuff by Max and the crew! Should be a
must for every modern savage. Stay primal. Farewell.
