Greetings. The latest slab by Reach The Sky, titled "So Far From Home"
[Victory Records], is a unique beast that takes what might called Pop/Punk
and cranks the power. The vocals are clean and strong with a modern feel,
but the added punch comes from the instrumental slam.
The guitar and drum work is melodious, but powerful. In a way it makes
me think of early Bad Religion, but heavier. There is a lot of emotion here,
a lot of sadness. It never comes as trite or unreal, and with the powerful
vocals and instrumental it works.
Every song kicks, but my favorite is "So Far From Home." It rocks.
Other great songs include "Seems Like Forever," "Tonight," and "Lost
Glories."
In summary, it's a powerful hardcore opus with deeply rooted emotions.
Fans of Hardcore should really enjoy this one, as well as new style Punks.
Some call this Emocore, but I call it Hardcore with soul. Stay evil. Later.

                       "'Bloodhunt' by Centinex"

                            Bill Vogel III

Greetings from the darkness. The new miniCD by Sweden's own Centinex,
called "Bloodhunt" [Repulse Records], is a relentless Dark Metal onslaught
that beats the hell out of the current stock of Trend Metal offerings. The
sound is a raw, bleak, and visceral onset that roars on this 6 song slab of
old style Black/Death Metal. At first blemish it reminds one of early Samael
and Order From Chaos.
The songs are fast, with a stripped down charm that shows the proverb
"simple is better" is still true. The first cut, "Under The Pagan Glory," is
the perfect opening tracks. The hooks dig in deep, and the rest is shred.
Next is "For Centuries Untold." It has a similar feel to "Under The
Pagan Glory." Centinex's vocals are the shrill Swedish style of Death
growls.
"Luciferian Moon" follows. This is a good track also.
Then comes the title cut. Yet another good song, it smashes at a fast
pace and leaves no evidence.
Song 5, called "The Conquest Infernal," is the slowest track and my
favorite from this great CD. The groove is brutal here, and I really liked
it. Even though it is slower the song feels heavier, and has a much darker
vibe. It has a more Doom/Goth Death mood.
The last song is "Like Darkened Storms." It brilliantly finishes this
22 minute slugfest. It has that faster feel again.
Overall, an excellent opus that I truly enjoyed. Fans of Dark Metal,
Black/Death, or extreme Metal will love this. Get it. Stay evil. Later.

Related Bands: Samael, Order From Chaos, Immortal, Marduk, Acheron,

Want to rattle your cage? I have just the thing. The new, brilliant
CD by Iron Monkey, titled "Our Problem" [Earache Records], is one raging
psychedelic slab of pure metal mayhem. Shrill Death growl vocals, tons of
distortion, and the heaviest psychedelic Doom guitar playing all colliding
into one massive train wreck that leaves you feeling extremely pumped are
just some of the reasons to buy this release.
Imagine a fight breaking out between Black Sabbath, A.C., and the
Refused. That is what this sounds like, except HEAVIER! I've been hooked on
this band ever since their debut self?titled EP. They are great!
The best songs from this CD are "Supagorgonizer," "Bad Year," and "2
Golden Rules." There are 13 tracks total, counting the 5 spacer cuts that
proceed the bonus track.
In summary, this is one butt kicking CD that deserves a ton of
attention and praise. This is the real deal. Get it. Stay evil. Later.

"'The Key To The Gate Of Apocalypses' by Mistiggo Varggoth Darkestra"

This is one serious slab of Death Metal. The new CD by Mistiggo
Varggoth Darkestra, aptly named "The Key To The Gate Of Apocalypses" [The End
Records], consists of one 74 minute track of strangulating Black/Death Metal
that is unlike anything that I have ever heard.
It takes a stoic soul to get through this release as it is one hell of
a huge bite to swallow, but it is well worth the trauma. The portions of
this disc are separated and introduced by long, almost ambient passages
consisting of noises, rumbles, roars, and weird sounds like goats and
drumming. Sometimes they're long, but they do set the perfect mood for the
musical portions.
The musical segments of raw, detuned Black Metal with raspy growls that
are simultaneously distorted naturally and electronically. The guitars are
low, raw, and edgy, rumbling perfectly with the vocals.
They also use some unusual instruments such as organs and war drums to add
even more to the apocalyptic feel.
Overall I loved this CD. Mistiggo Varggoth Darkestra is cutting new
territory that few bands could master successfully, but they do it in an epic
fashion. Get it. Stay evil. Hail Darkness.

"'Driven To Conquer' by Internal Bleeding"

                            Bill Vogel III

September 17, 1999 A.D.

My first experience with the infamous Internal Bleeding was their
latest opus titled "Driven To Conquer" [Pavement Records]. And it was very
good...
Internal Bleeding's style is groove centered Death Metal, featuring
deep, clear Death growls and subtle eclectic influences such as slight Arabic
musical inflections. These diverse touches add to, but never detract from
their strength and powerful Death Metal sound. Every degree works perfectly,
and this CD makes me want to go and get all of their other works. I was very
impressed with this opus.
"Rage" is a psychotic romp with some slight Arabic influences.
Internal Bleeding's style of Death Metal is rhythmic, catchy, and NEVER
boring.
The title track is one of my favorites. The guitar work is crisp and
heavy, and the vocals are a deep, skillfully done growl that surpasses even
the masters of the genre.
My other favorite cut is Internal Bleeding's homage to the Michael
Douglas movie "Falling Down." It is amazing. Filled with rage it roars
across your senses, leaving everything scourged like the Mongol hordes.
Other cool tracks include: "Slave Soul," "Conditioned," and "Inhuman
99." Then there is the massive epic "Anthem For A Doomed Youth," which
features a hidden track in it. This is a VERY good CD.
Overall, the new Internal Bleeding CD is a raucous roar of Death Metal
that both stimulates and obliterates. This CD WILL NOT disappoint! Get it.
Stay evil. Hail Darkness.

                    "'Intermezzo II' EP by Satyricon"
                                   by
                             Bill Vogel III

September 24, 1999 A.D.

Time will pass, say 20 or so years, and Metal fans will still be
listening to Satyricon. Satyricon's new mini-CD, titled "Intermezzo II"
[Nuclear Blast Records], is a bombastic assault on the typical, and somewhat
common, style of Black Metal that most of the horde is manifesting these
strange days. Satyricon will always be an institution in this genre, and
these are just some of the reasons why...
There's experimentation here along with the tried-and-true classic
Black Metal style. In the song "A Moment Of Clarity" there is a clear and
insidious groove that sinks in like a gator's teeth, spins you around until
you're dizzy, and brutalizes you until you're done. I like this song a lot.
My other favorite cut from this CD is "Blessed From Below." It is
strange but cool. The sound is a mixture of Black, Industrial (Synth), and
Pop. It's slow, soft, and extremely dark. The overall feel is very
atmospheric with an ambience of pure raging darkness. This is the best
track.
Frost and Satyr also do an insanely blistering cover of Sarcofago's
"Inri." (In Latin the word Inri means, "Born To Be Mocked.") This is an old
style Black Thrash barrage that Satyricon also does brilliantly. It rocks...
The other song is a remix of "Nemesis Divina." It has a similar feel
to "Inri," and it is very good as well.
This is a morbidly glorious CD that I recommend for all fans of Black
Metal and extreme music. Stay evil. Hail Darkness.

From a long, long time ago... And a galaxy far, far away... There was
an empire called Germany, and it produced a style of Death Metal called Old
School or German Style Death Metal. Its focal attributes were shrill growls
and Thrash style instrumentals. Lots of bands played it, but Kreator was
credited for it.
Well after many years, and many great albums such as "Flag Of Hate" and
"Coma Of Souls," they have returned with a new opus called "Endorama"
[Pavement Records]. It's a solid work, but not as innovative or heavy as
their previous endeavors. The Death elements are almost gone now, and they
have gone towards a Power Metal style with slight elements of Industrial
(mostly in the mix of the sound).
The mix is a little rough at times; once in a while the vocals sound
patchy and disjointed. But it is a good CD.
The two songs that I especially enjoyed were "Tyranny" and
"Pandemonium." The other really cool tracks were "Shadowland," "Golden Age,"
and the title track.
Overall, it's a good CD that I recommend to Power Metal fans and
Kreator fans. Get it. Stay evil. Later.

Greetings. The return of the mighty Hypocrisy, with their self?titled
[Nuclear Blast Records] record, has been one of the most highly anticipated
events of 1999. Sadly, most of this great band's Death Metal influence is
gone. For example, the vocals sound more like Peter's side project PAIN than
they do previous releases by Hypocrisy.
But don't let this discourage you, because this is still an excellent
CD. The overall sound is stunningly grim, which I appreciate totally. The
instrumentation is similar to the Atmospheric Deathrock vibe of "Abducted,"
but darker and slightly more refined. The mood is crushing, like scenes from
future in the "Terminator" movies, except much more stark and surreal.
The tracks that I preferred, all were good by the way, include "Until
The End," "Paranormal Mysteria," "Reversed Reflections," "Fractured
Millenium," and "Apocalyptic Hybrid." The tracks are solid, rockin', and
without pretension. It was worth the wait.
Judged on its own merit this is a cool CD. Get it, and enter the void.
 Stay evil. Hail Darkness.

Ever wondered what would happen if someone took extreme, raw edged Punk
and crossed it with the Industrial/Noise Metal genius of Helmet? The end
result would be a talented L.A. band called Amen, and their debut release
titled "Amen" [I Am/Roadrunner Records] is just that. Imagine a frenetic
hybrid between THE UNSANE and the mighty HELMET. Except it is better.
The vocals are electronically distorted, but have a similar rumble to
that of Helmet's. The entire soundscape melds seamlessly into a chaotic and
visceral cacophony that is a perfect balance of brains and brute force. It
is a schizophrenic splash of rage that is equally awe-inspiring as it is
entertaining.
The tracks that I especially enjoyed were "When A Man Dies A Woman,"
"Lovers Are Killers," and "Everything Is Untrue."
Overall, it is an aggressive work that should please fans of extreme
music. It's nice to see Roadrunner releasing the HEAVY stuff again. Get it.

All scrivener's errors (typos) are the sole responsibility of me, B. Vogel
III. Any flak directed at other writers should be sent to me...I do not want
my friends besieged by silly crap. My views do not necessarily reflect those
of Rocknet, Compuserve, Prodigy, America Online, the World Wide Web,
Internet, the other writers, my friends, my church, my family, Jimi Hendrix,
James Hetfield, Glenn Danzig, or anyone else. So there. :)

Note to Pro-Censorship types: Bite me.

Beware of people who can do nothing but gripe, whine, and moan...by writing
or speaking trite, naive, and idiotic crap (i.e. certain members of the U.S.
Congress, and most of the White House).
