                     "'Pale Folklore' by Agalloch"
                            Bill Vogel III

August 20, 1999 A.D.

From the darkened depths of the ruins of the Doomdeath Metal band
Aeolachrymae was forged the dark and melancholy Agalloch. Agalloch's debut
release, titled "Pale Folklore" [The End Records?, is an epic of dark and
diverse proportions. Agalloch's style is a brilliantly devised and executed
form of Dark Metal that draws on influences ranging from Death Metal, Gothic,
and other assorted realms.
Their use of keyboards is expansive and artistic, but still heavy and
cool. The total sound is melodious and melancholic, leaving a stark, surreal
atmosphere of dread. I truly dig this opus.
The first cut, "She Painted Fire Across The Skyline," begins with a
grim instrumental intro that perfectly sets the mood. It's awesome.
Agalloch's vocals are a shrill Black Deathrash style, but are mixed low
to enhance the mood. Clean vocals are scattered throughout lightly as well.
This is my favorite cut, but all are cool.
There are electric and acoustic guitars, bells, keyboards, tribal
drums, and other dark touches here. It works very well. The lyrical
portions of their songs have a distinctly poetic nature to them akin to the
poetry of Edgar Allan Poe, which I greatly appreciate. There is poetry in
the darkness...
Next is "The Misshapen Steed." Each track sets its own somber mood and
elegance. Other stunning cuts include "Dead Winter Days" and "As Embers
Dress The Sky."
Overall, it is an eclectic and powerful opus that is both brutal as
well as beautiful. To listen to it is to be in awe. I highly recommend this
one for the darkest souls. Farewell sunlight.

                     "'Burning Bridges' by Arch Enemy"
                              Bill Vogel III

August 5, 1999 A.D.

Dare I say it? Could this be the best album of 1999? It seems a bit
premature to declare such an epochian status at this juncture, but it is
true. The third album by Arch Enemy, titled "Burning Bridges" [Century
Media], continues the evolution of this progressive Deathrock Metal into a
true powerhouse in the genre.
Akin to other great bands of the genre [e.g. Konkhra, Entombed,
Dominus, etc.] the angst level is perfectly matched with skilled playing and
writing bombast. But a divergent tinge is mingled with the subtle addition
of Classic Metal style guitar leads and solos. A new twist for the band is
the use of Gothic instrumentation [e.g. violins] sparely throughout the opus.
Fear not though, the brutality has stayed strong and even at times
seems a shard more ragged and evil at times.
Tracks of extremely cranked note include "The Immortal," "Dead Inside,"
"Demonic Science," and the slow but powerful title track which has violins.
The import version from Japan includes two bonus cuts--"Diva Satanica" and
the instrumental track "Hydra."
It may still be too early to proclaim this release as the best of 1999,
but it is up there for sure. Forget Korn, get this! Stay evil. Farewell

                 "'Sudamerican Porno' by Jesus Martyr"
                            Bill Vogel III

August 7, 1999 A.D.

Are you sick to death of pansy sounding Industrial music? Here's the
fix... The new CD by Jesus Martyr, called "Sudamerican Porno," is a
bombastic mixture of Industrial Metal with the more extreme forms of
aggressive music. This CD makes me eat my words somewhat from my previous
review of Arch Enemy's CD "Burning Bridges" because it provides stiff
competition against it for BEST METAL RELEASE of 1999. It is strange to
review 2 such powerful and epic works at the same time, but these days are
While the vocals are not truly Death/Grind style they are harsh enough
to appeal to those of us who appreciate such a barrage of angst, but vary
from that psychotic onset to a dark and clean Goth gloom at times. Imagine a
mixture of early Fear Factory, Pitch Shifter, and Drown with some more
diverse and eclectic influences. But it is even better than that.
The sound is a rhythmic, pummeling, and chaotic onslaught of audio roar
that is awe-inspiring, and is as hook filled as a barbed wire crown. This
opus is immediately enjoyable [a rare quality] but staggeringly heavy and
complex enough to sustain the awe without becoming tiresome. It rocks.
Songs of necessary admiration included the powerful and intricate "Next
Biologycal Crisis," the epic "G.O.D. (Glamour Of Divinities)," and the
bonesaw efficient cut "Beyond Primitive Utopias." Every track shreds.
This brilliant band gives FEAR FACTORY some much needed, and truly
relentless, competition.
Overall, this is an incredible release that I truly enjoyed. I
recommend to all fanatics of aggressive Metals [such as Death, Grind, etc.]
AND Industrial music as well. I'd easily rate it a 9.8 out of a possible 10.
Go get it. Stay evil. Farewell sunlight.

                      "'Contagion' by Prophecy"
                           Bill Vogel III

August 24, 1999 A.D.

Somewhere an epoch has occurred. The new CD by Prophecy, titled
"Contagion" [Pavement], has verged the apocalyptic void between
Techno/Industrial and Death Metal in a totally aberrant manner. And God knew
that it was good...
Many elements are juxtaposed, collided, and imploded skillfully on this
CD. Imagine elements of Techno, Thrash, Industrial, Death, and Gothic
perfectly melded like cold fusion chaos. Clean vocals are electronically
distorted and played against Deathgrowls to heighten the raging assault.
Every track crushes. The ones that I especially appreciated include
"Lost," "Visual Betrayer," "Sexual," "9 F.O.F. (M.L.D. Clone)," and the
exceptionally powerful "Whore-Like Depression." There's not one bad track
on this CD.
I instantly loved this CD. It rocks. Overall, it's a solid blistering
opus that crushes all the trends. The new epoch has begun...who needs a new
millennium! Prophecy, along with peers such as Jesus Martyr, Darkside,
Project 44, and Static?X, have blazed new territory previously only touched on
by better known acts such as Fear Factory. This is the real thing! Get it.
 Stay evil. Farewell sunlight.

"'Solemn Setting Sun' by Human Drama"
                            Bill Vogel III

August 7, 1999 A.D.

Greetings. It seems that even the stranger things in life have an odd
appeal at times. Such is the case with Human Drama's latest offering,
"Solemn Setting Sun" [Triple X]. It has been 4 years since this Goth Punk
band's last release.
"Solemn..." is a mellower than usual release for my recommendation, but
variety at times is good. The heaviness of this comes not from the harsh
shrapnel of powerful instruments or aggressive vocals, but from the stark
moods set by the bleak soundscapes created by this outfit. The vocals are
clean, and full of the Goth dread.
They use the typical bag of Gothic tricks [e.g. violins, keyboards,
etc.] but in a better than average way. Songs of reputable note on this CD
include "The Ways And Wounds (Of My World)," "A Single White Rose," "I Cannot
Believe," "King Of Loneliness," and the title track. In total there are
sixteen songs.
Overall it's a good release, but I would only recommend it to people
who already like Goth as it would not easily appeal to fans of the more
extreme forms of music such as Death, Grind, and Black Metal.
Stay evil. Later.

"'Bigger Than The Devil' by Stormtroopers Of Death"
                          Bill Vogel III

August 12, 1999 A.D.

That title seems mighty apt, and it is. This is the most highly
anticipated reunion release of '99, and has been well worth the wait. The
new CD by S.O.D. is titled "Bigger Than The Devil" [Nuclear Blast Records],
and is one raging slab of humor tinged Psycho Thrash that walks the fine line
between New School Hardcore and Power Thrash with such skill and ferocity
that it would make Genghis Khan wet himself.
This is no name-only release that rests on its laurels. No, no, no!
It more than keeps pace with the current horde of heavy bands such as Earth
Crisis, Hatebreed, Blood For Blood, Snot, Godsmack, etc. The riffs bludgeon
and the vocals are an acoustic car crusher. After all these years this
collective war machine is far from gun shy.
The coolest feature of the S.O.D. ensemble is that they mix equals
parts humor with their angst. For example, the song "Monkeys Rule" is a
reference to the movie Planet Of The Apes. How many bands would do something
like that? Not many.
Other noteworthy cuts include "We All Bleed Red," "Xerox," "Fugu,"
"Free Dirty Needles," and the pounding title track. In total there are 25
cuts, a few of which are under ten seconds in length.
Overall, this is a solid Thrash release that doesn't miss a beat. The
great bands never die...they just sometimes take really long vacations. Stay
evil. Later.

"'Who's Gonna Burn' by Carnal Forge"
                              Bill Vogel III

August 26, 1999 A.D.

Greetings from the abyss, my friends. Today's question for deep and
dark philosophical thought is, "Who's Gonna Burn." The answer is all trendy
posers when they hear the new CD by the devastating Carnal Forge, which
strangely enough is titled "Who's Gonna Burn" [W.A.R./Relapse Records]. This
malicious little slab of Brutal Death Metal grinds 'em into dust like little
piles of ash in an industrial strength microwave.
The first cut, which is the title track, reflects the general feel of
this opus--fast, relentless, aggressive, surgical brutality with the
devastation of napalm. It's Hyperblast Death that never fails to amaze.
The vocals are similar to Entombed's Swedish Style growls, except a
little cleaner. Carnal Forge's sound is crisp, heavy, and never boring.
These guys kill!
Tracks of excessive skill and crunch include "Godzilla Is Coming
Through," "Born To Hate," "Evilizer," "Confuzzed," and "Part Animal... Part
Machine." But my absolute favorite is "The Other Side." It is a pounding,
slashing tornado of razors.
Overall this is an outstanding and brilliant release, and thanks to
Relapse it is now available in the U.S. This is Brutal Deathrock Metal with
a touch of Hyperblast angst. Grit your teeth and bare it, but just be sure
to get it. Stay evil. Hail Darkness.

More Metal news...

This month it goes out to TVT RECORDS who dropped JUSTER and
BIRDBRAIN from their label/catalog. TVT's reply to my email stated that
they "didn't sell so they were dropped." That is SO typical of the whores
that run most labels and publishing houses now. There is no art anymore
because everything is reduced down to monetary value alone. This sucks, and
so do they.

COAL CHAMBER/// Are currently finishing up the final touches on their
new CD, titled "Chamber Music."

Centinex. It is called "Bloodhunt."

ADRAMALECH/// Are no longer on Repulse Records. These Finnish Death
brutes have started working on their next CD, "Pure Blood Doom." It will
have 8 tracks.

EVEN SONG/// The new CD by the Doomdeath band Even Song is called
"Path Of Angels" [Displeased Records]. Expect an epic power barrage along
the lines of early PARADISE LOST, and MY DYING BRIDE.

DEMIGOD/// Is currently working on their second album of innovative
Death Metal.

ROTTEN SOUND/// Are working on their second album, titled "Drain," at
Sunlight Studios.

TOTTEN KORPS/// These brutal Death monsters have scrapped and
completely re-recorded their debut CD, "Tarnheim: Athj-Land-j Cyclopean
Crypts Of Citadels." It was recorded in the best studio in their
homeland of Chile. This is Brutal Death in the vein of KATAKLYSM, NILE, and

NIGHT TO DIE/// This Spanish band's debut, titled "All Evil Crying,"
is an unusual mixture of Death Metal and Flamenco influences.

CENTINEX/// Has released their miniCD titled "Bloodhunt." It features
3 new songs with the new members, and 2 tracks from the "Reborn Through
Flames" sessions. There will be a limited edition vinyl version featuring a
DEATH cover and different artwork.

AVULSED/// Their drummer Furni has left, being replaced by Tripas.
Bassist Ivan is also gone. He has been replaced by Tana, formerly of
MISTRESS. These changes will only slightly delay the release of their second
CD, "Stab Wound Orgasm." Deathers get ready!

DISGORGE/// Expect the new CD, "Forensick," from these Mexican
Deathgrinders by middle 1999. Word has it that is sounds like early CARCASS
meets OPPRESSOR. This will be their second CD. Their debut, "Chronic
Corpora Infest," has been released by American Line Productions.
TODAY IS THE DAY/// Their new CD on Relapse Records is titled "In The
Eyes Of God."

UNIVERSAL SOLDIER II/// The soundtrack for this new movie is really
good, featuring tracks by acts such as FEAR FACTORY, MEGADETH, FLYS, STATIC?X,
ANTHRAX, etc. It appears to be all Metal acts.

Friday, August 13, 1999...

This is the 100th anniversary of the birth of Alfred Hitchcock, world's
greatest director of suspense films. The man was a genius.
